Case Details:
On July 19, 2024, a software update from CrowdStrike disrupted banks, airlines, TV stations, healthcare providers, and hotels by causing a major outage on Microsoft Windows systems.
After the outage was reported, $CRWD fell 11.09% on the same day.
Speaking about the damage caused by this outage, Microsoft stated in its blog: "We estimate CrowdStrike's update affected 8.5 million Windows devices."
This is the first specific figure released, potentially marking it as the worst cyber event in history.
Moreover, in the US, over 1,500 flights were canceled for the third day in a row, with Delta Air Lines in particular struggling. In the UK, 45 flights were canceled on Saturday.
NHS England also warned of delays as healthcare services recovered from the outage, urging patients to keep their appointments and acknowledging that GP services would be slow to resume due to a backlog.
On July 22, 2024, CrowdStrike addressed the outage on social media: "We understand the profound impact this has had on everyone. We know our customers, partners and their IT teams are working tirelessly and we’re profoundly grateful. We apologize for the disruption this has created."
Investors suspect that CrowdStrike may not have acted in their best interests and has engaged in securities fraud, leading to a significant drop in stock price.
